In the Chinese port city of Quanzhou, they developed their own weaving technique. Consisting of floating weft threads over three or more warp threads, this weaving technique creates a shimmering front with a full flat back. As this fabric became widely traded on the trade routes along the Silk Road, it came in contact with Arabic traders, which named this fabric Zayton, which is what they called the city of Quanzhou.  And the product created here came to be called Silk Satin Fabric.

This fabric is still known for it’s highly lustrous front and flat, dull back.  Silk Satin fabric is now used for everything from wedding dresses, to belting, veiling, to chemises.  Silk Satin fabric drapes elegantly and flows like water, creating smooth drape and lovely lines.  The 16MM Satin available at Damask Raven is light weight for summer wear, with the luster silk is known for.  Perfect for creating lush gowns and tunics, buy Silk Satin from Damask Raven and create History in Style.
